valentines day with creatures that slobber

I’ve never been strongly for or against Valentines Day.  I usually find the complaining about the commercialism and how its an “unfair day for singles” as tiresome as couples who make too big a deal out of it.  Enjoy it with someone or by yourself, use it as an extra chance to tell those you love that you love them, which is what I always try to do.

So I made some homemade Valentines cards for a few special folks

And I spent the day volunteering at Animal Acres, one of my favorite places to spend a Sunday.  I also got to bring my new friend Erin along, who was pretty much in a state of bliss the whole day being around all the animals on such a gorgeous day.

They normally give tours on Sundays. but it was a special Valentines Day event, so Ciddy, the normal tour guide, gave a little educational lesson in the gazebo, and assorted regulars got to man the different barns and help keep an eye on all the visitors and tell them about the animals, as well as help them interact with them.  So I got be on pig duty!  Because, as many know, the pigs are amongst my favorite:

piggy belly rubs

So for about 4 hours, I showed people how to give the piggies belly rubs, explained about genetic modification, and made sure the pigs weren’t getting too fussy

plus, right next to the pig pens?

God I love the cows.  They are just so beautiful to look at.  And once tours were dying down, I got some alone time with some of them…

Paulo is the prettiest cow ever.

But Pinto totally took a Myspace photo with me, haha.

At the end of the day, I was exhausted, and may have suffered a small bite on my arm from a donkey, but it was a great day.  I’d never seen that many newbies come to an Animal Acres event, and though I ended up sharing the same stories and facts over and over again, it never got old, because seeing the realization over people’s faces as they learned what horrible places these amazing animals came from, and the love in their hearts when they got to spend time with them face to face….it was more rewarding than I can possibly say.  And, in fitting with the theme of the day, it filled my heart with love, and, as always, reminded me of why I do what I do.

What can I say, I’m in love with being vegan.
